Aiyegbeni shines in Haifa win
Israeli club Maccabi Haifa clinched a Uefa Champions League victory over Olympiakos Piraeus on Tuesday night, thanks to a hat-trick from Nigerian international Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Maccabi`s 3-0 win in Cyprus is their first-ever Champions League victory.
The Nigerian announced his return from injury in emphatic fashion, putting his side ahead from the penalty spot in the 27th minute.
He scored his second on the hour, completing his surging run with a neat finish under the advancing goalkeeper.
Five minutes from full-time, Aiyegbeni killed off any threat of an Olympiakos revival with his third goal.
Matchwinning performance
Yitzhak Shum, manager of the Israeli side, was elated with the performance of his players.
"I can`t fault my men, they were absolutely fantastic, they played above themselves.
"I think any win over Olympiakos would have been great, but 3-0 is a landmark win," he said.
Aiyegbeni`s matchwinning performance won praise from team-mate Giovanni Rosso.
"He is not only a young striker with amazing ability but is probably the best striker I have ever played with.
Aiyegbeni was absent from the Maccabi side that lost 2-5 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
