Senegal`s Thiaw claims he struck back following racist abuse
GENEVA,
Lausanne`s Senegalese striker Pape Thiaw claimed Wednesday he struck Swiss international Sebastien Fournier after being subjected to racial abuse by the midfielder during Monday`s league match with Servette.
Thiaw, who had been sent off for a second bookable offence at half-time, faces a lengthy ban and possible legal action after allegedly punching Fournier and breaking his nose.
Fournier has begun legal proceedings against Thiaw, who has already been fined an undisclosed sum by his club and faces a lengthy ban.
"I admit I did wrong and it`s normal that I should be penalised. I lost my head and my action had nothing to do with football," said Thiaw.
"But I don`t accept being insulted. We have to say no to racism," the Sengalese player told the daily Lausanne Le Matin.
"Sebastien Fournier even said: `dirty Black, you`ll never be a great player`," claimed Thiaw, adding that if Fournier went ahead with legal proceedings he would lodge a complaint for racism.
"Some of my team-mates heard the insults very well and are ready to give evidence in my favour," he added.
However Fournier denied racially abusing Thiaw during the game which Servette won 3-0 putting them second in the table, two points behind Grasshoppers.
"It doesn`t surprise me. Every time there is an incident with a coloured player it`s always the same argument," Fournier told the Tribune.
