Fred VUBEM
They arrived ten days ahead of time so as to acclimatise.
The Junior Lions arrived in Egypt on Sunday September 13 to take part in the Junior World Cup tournament due to take place in that country. The delegation comprising 22 players and six members of staff immediately took up residence in Ismailia, a city some 80 kilometres to the Suez Canal which has always brought Cameroon luck in the past. The military football team camped in this city ahead of the World cup in India and African Cup of Nations in Uganda when they emerged vice world champions and African champion respectively.
While awaiting the arrival of officials of FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, the Boys of Alain Wabo continue fine-tuning their skills in preparation for the first encounter against South Korea next September 26. They are scheduled to play some friendly matches while in Egypt. Prior to their departure for Egypt, the Junior Lions were in Turkey for one week where they beat the United Arab Emirates, 3-0 in a friendly encounter. Upon their return to the country, the junior Lions bowed to Union of Douala 0-1 on the eve of their departure for Egypt.
Cameroon, alongside Ghana and Nigeria, qualified for the tournament by picking one of the three available tickets during the last African Youth Championship where they bowed to Ghana 0-2 in the final. Egypt qualified for the tournament automatically as host country. Cameroon was drawn in Group C alongside the United States of America, Korea and Germany
The FIFA U-20 World Cup, until 2005 was known as the FIFA World Youth Championship. The Championship has been organised every two years since the first tournament in 1977. Only seven nations have won the title in the 16 tournaments held. Argentina is the most successful team with six titles, followed by Brazil with four titles. Portugal won two titles, while Germany, Spain, and formerly existing nations like the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia have won the title once each. The competition was renamed as a “World Cup” in 2007. Canada hosted the event that year and the 2011 edition of the tournament will be played in Colombia.
