World-Senegal chief targets second round at World Cup
DAKAR
Senegal`s football federation chief has set his country a target of reaching the second round in this summer`s World Cup.
Senegal, competing at the World Cup finals for the first time, play world champions France in the opening game in Seoul on May 31 before taking on Uruguay and Denmark.
``Our objective is to get to the second round at the World Cup,`` Elhadji Malick Sy head of Senegal`s soccer federation told reporters on Tuesday. ``It is an objective which has been very carefully thought through.``
Senegal, coached by Frenchman Bruno Metsu, reached the final of the African Nations Cup in Mali last month where they were beaten by African champions Cameroon in a penalty shootout.
Senegal`s national squad will play Bolivia in Dakar on March 27 in a World Cup warm-up friendly. All but two of the 22-man squad named on Tuesday play for French club sides.
The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed one other warm-up match, against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on May 14.
