Germany to host Confederations Cup in 2005
BERLIN
- Germany will host the Confederations Cup in 2005 as a dress rehearsal before staging the World Cup finals the following year, the German Football Association (DFB) said on Sunday.
The decision to award the event to Germany was taken by world governing body FIFA during meetings at its headquarters in Zurich, the DFB said on its website.
The Confederations Cup takes place every two years and features the champions from each of the six continental confederations that make up FIFA, plus the World Cup winners and the host nation.
The tournament was last held in Japan and South Korea last year as a test before this year`s World Cup finals.
The hosts for the next Confederations Cup in 2003 have yet to be named. Australia, Egypt, Portugal, South Africa and the United States have expressed an interest while France and Switzerland were considering a joint bid. The bids have to be submitted officially to FIFA before May 1.
