MADRID

Ricardo Cavas put Espanyol ahead with a fine solo effort on 20 minutes and the home side should have had a second just before halftime but Raul Tamudo saw his penalty well saved by Inaki Lafuente.
Bilbao were better in the second half but the closest they came to an equaliser was when Tiko struck a 30-metre freekick just wide. Five minutes into injury-time Quique de Lucas struck with his freekick to wrap up the points for Espanyol.

REAL MALLORCA 4 OSASUNA 2
Mallorca`s Cameroon forward Samuel Eto`o struck twice, the second from the penalty spot, before Osasuna got their act together. Pipa Gancedo pulled one back a minute before halftime and Cesar Palacios was left unmarked from a freekick to turn in the equaliser on 64 minutes.

REAL SOCIEDAD 0 TENERIFE 2
Tenerife reignited their hopes of survival with this victory over fellow relegation candidates Real Sociedad. Bruno Marioni gave the visitors the lead against the run of play after 18 minutes with a freekick that left Sander Westerveld glued to the spot.
John Toshack`s side had most of the possession but they lacked touch in front of goal and Tenerife added a second two minutes from time, Bichi Fuertes scoring from the spot after he was pushed in the area by Luiz Alberto.

VALENCIA 2 SEVILLA 0
Valencia stayed top as two goals in the last 25 minutes earned them victory over a gritty Sevilla side. Juan Sanchez got the opener, redirecting a wayward shot from Kily Gonzalez, and Miguel Angel Angulo added a second in injury-time.
In between the two goals, Sevilla had Victor Salas sent off and Angulo joined him on the sidelines for the final few seconds as he picked up a second yellow card for his goal celebration.

VALLADOLID 2 CELTA VIGO 4
Catanha bagged a hat-trick to lead Celta Vigo to what was a much more difficult victory than the scoreline might suggest. Sergio got the first for the visitors, with Catanha then striking twice either side of a neat finish from Fernando.
Celta then had Fernando Caceres sent off and Valladolid capitalised to get back to 2-3 with a Fernando penalty given for a Mendez handball.
Victor Fernandez`s side were being pressed back all the time but Catanha clinched the three points as he rounded the keeper at the second attempt after Alexander Mostovoi had found him on a swift counter-attack.

REAL BETIS 2 BARCELONA 1
Barca dominated possession after falling behind to a Dani strike inside the third minute but looked short of ideas up front and only managed an equaliser through Betis defender Ito, who headed into his own net from a corner on 55 minutes.

REAL MADRID 3 VILLARREAL 0
Real needed a good performance after their midweek King`s Cup final defeat to Deportivo and, while they were below their best, they will be happy with a win that takes them six points clear of Barcelona going into next week`s clash at the Nou Camp.
Raul was left unmarked to nod in the opener on 14 minutes, Fernando Hierro tucked in a penalty given for a foul on Zinedine Zidane to make the game safe on the hour and substitute Steve McManaman rounded the keeper for the third five minutes later.
