Germany play England in a World Cup qualifying match here Saturday. Following are penpics of five classic matches between the two famous rivals:
1938 - friendly (Berlin)
Germany 3 England 6
The second international between the two sides, notable for the controversial Nazi salute by England`s players as the teams lined up before kick-off.
England, with Stanley Matthews and Cliff Bastin in fine form, prove too strong for the hosts.
1966 - World Cup final (London)
England 4 West Germany 2
England lift first and only World Cup thanks to a Geoff Hurst hat-trick.
But controversy surrounds Hurst`s second goal, awarded only after the intervention of Azerbaijani linesman. Hurst later admits to doubts over whether ball crossed goal-line.
1970 - World Cup quarter-final (Leon, Mexico)
West Germany 3 England 2
Reigning World champions England look to be cruising into last four after taking a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes left.
However Alf Ramsey`s decision to substitute Bobby Charlton proves fatal; Franz Beckenbauer launches fightback before Gerd Muller pounces for an extra time winner.
1990 - World Cup semi-final (Turin, Italy)
West Germany 1 England 1 (aet; West Germany win 4-3 on penalties)
Match made famous for Paul Gascoigne`s tears.
Germany take lead after deflected Andy Brehme free-kick loops over Peter Shilton. p
England equalise through Gary Lineker but penalty shoot-out misses by Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce see Germany advance.
1996 - European Championship semi-final (London)
England 1 Germany 1 (aet; Germany win 6-5 on penalties)
Alan Shearer gives Euro `96 hosts a dream start with headed goal after two minutes./p
Germany, missing injured Jurgen Klinsmann, struck back however through Stefan Kuntz and then stayed cool in penalty shoot-out to reach final.
