Lions set for records!
They will become the first African nations to
win the cup consecutively if they defeat Senegal,
rated by book makers as the under dogs. A victory on
Sunday will also make Cameroon to rival Ghana’s four
times record of winning the converted trophy.
The Lions stamped their mark on continental soccer at
the semi-final match in which they showed superiority
in all departments of the game against the Eagles of
Mali. The Malians’ hopes of a triumph over Cameroon
was raised after they defeated South Africa, another
World Cup qualifier like Cameroon for the semi-final
slot.
But the Malians were dazzled by a mathematical
combination of Pius Ndiefi and Olembe who scored two
quick goals at the tail end of the first half, which
ended 2-0.
The Eagles had virtual control when the second half
started; earning three corner kicks in quick
successions. Play too became rough with both sides
picking yellow cards while two malians had to be
carried out of the field.
The final blow came at the 63 rd minute when a
powerful cross from the left flank was stopped at the
eighteen metre box by Marc Vivian Foe which he beat
Malian keeper and transformed into a goal.
At this time the 65000 strong Malian crowd came to
the reality that the task was actually beyond them and
started leaving the stadium.
The finals on Sunday is obviously a clash of the
titans as the Indomitable Lions meet the Lions of
Senegal.
The Senegalese picked their ticket to the finals in a
tense encounter with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The Nigeria-Senegal match which also sprang many
surprises left the Lions jittery as the Super Eagles
drew level close to the end of ninety minutes .The
match had to go into extra time.
During the prolongation. the Senegalese scored at the
seventh minute but the Eagles threw away their chance
of drawing level when Samson Oroume failed to
transform a penalty kick into a goal.
The Senegalese Lions who played ten for over ninety
minutes of the match because one of the defenders was
sanctioned with a red card at the 30th minute will
play their first CAN finals with the Indomitable Lions
on Sunday.
Meanwhile the Eagles of Mali and the Super Eagles of
Nigeria will play the classification match on
Saturday.
