Cameroon coach vows to break ``curse`` of Germany
YAOUNDE,
Cameroon`s German coach Winfried Schafer has vowed to ``break the curse`` of German supremacy when the two teams meet in the first round of next year`s World Cup.
Cameroon`s Indomitable Lions, who won the Olympic title in Sydney last year, were drawn in the tournament`s group E along with the Germans, three times World Cup winners, Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Ireland.
``I want Cameroon to finish on top of the group at all costs,`` Schafer said in an interview with the official daily Cameroon Tribune, adding that he was not daunted by the prospect of taking on his compatriots.
``I am going to break the curse of Germany`s reputation in the World Cup,`` he said. ``Cameroon is in a good group. We have the opportunity to go far in this World Cup.``
It will be the fifth time the Central African country, which has a population of 15 million people, have reached the World Cup finals.
Cameroon`s best performance was in 1990 in Italy, when they became the first African side to reach the quarter-finals.
Schafer, 51, was appointed coach in September.
The secretary-general of Cameroon`s soccer federation said Schafer`s nationality was not significant.
``He is a professional,`` Jean-Rene Atangana Mballa said.
