FECAFOOT launches operation ‘opened window on provincial leagues’

A programme initiated by FECAFOOT vice president David Mayebi to sell FECAFOOT activities to the public and football family code name ‘window on the provinces’ has been launched in Douala.
The programme will see national FECAFOOT officials travel to the ten provinces, to explain reforms of the football governing body and how its structures are operated. Douala was the first port of call, where the Secretary general, Jean Rene Atangana Mballa dwelled mainly on the reforms recently approved by the general assembly.
Atangana Mballa posited that that the reforms was one of the items on the list of priority the national bureau led by Iya Mohamed drew up following their election in 2000.
The reforms mainly concerned the first and second division leagues. As from next year, division one clubs will be increased from 16 to 18, while beginning this year each province will get just one representative in the national promotion tournament for division two sides.
In division one, the clubs will be divided into two groups of nine each. At the end of the first phase, the last teams in each group will be relegated, while the first four will go ahead to play a Super League. The other eight teams will struggle to stay away from the last two relegated positions.
Atanagana Mballa insisted that the reforms were needed to create excitement in the fans. That clubs will permanently be in competition, thereby obliged to perform well for the good of fans.
He argued that when spectators return en mass to watch games, then companies would also become interested in sponsoring the clubs. Consequently, clubs will have enough money to stabilise management and will be able to convince players to stay, rather than go in search for greener pasture abroad when they are not even ripe.
If the reforms go according to plan and FECAFOOT raises more income, Atangana Mballa promised club managers that FECAFOOT will begin granting subsidies to division two sides. Before then, to motivate the division one sides, like CAF or UEFA, FECAFOOT will pay bonuses for match won.
The meeting was attended by football stake holders in the province and provincial FECAFOOT managers. Club owners, referees and players who seek to know the benefits of the reforms were happy with the explanations of Atangana Mballa.
Provincial FECAFOOT secretary general, Mbappe Essoka also had the floor to throw light on the functioning of his structure. Through questions from journalists, he was able to clarify the situation of the promotion of clubs and referees in to division two.
The presidents of the divisional leagues in the Littoral provinces also exposed the problems plaguing their structures. It all centred around the lack of infrastructure and money.
The meeting was chaired by Littoral’s vice president Tombi A Roko who said he was glad that the operation was launched in his province. After welcoming guests, Tombi appealed to FECAFOOT president Iya Mohamed to also launch his campaign for re-elect next year in Douala.
The meeting was attended by national vice president, Charles Emedec and assistant treasurer, Moise Djombi Doff.
