PWD stay leaders despite defeat
Martin Etonge
The sweet run of PWD Bamenda has been stopped by neighbours Bamboutos Mbouda. In their first game at home after a five-match ban, Bamboutos edged PWD 1-0. It was the first defeat for PWD in the season.
PWD had set the record of winning six straight games. In spite of the defeat, PWD maintained their leadership position, 4 points adrift of runners up Bamboutos and Coton Sport Garoua who pounded visiting Mount Cameroon 3-1.
It is the third consecutive defeat for Mount Cameroon and fans are already getting worried about the shape of their team a month to go in their first international campaign in the Caf Cup Winners’ Cup.
Contrary to Mount Cameroon, defending champions Canon are in full winning gear. They recorded their fourth straight win with a 3-0 spanking of Unisport Bafang in Yaounde. Canon stand 5th on the table with 12 points, just like Fovu who beat Cintra Yaounde.
It was an excellent day for clubs in Douala. Caiman beat Victoria United (OPOPO) 2-1 in Douala, while Union travelled to Yaounde to silence Tonnerre 2-1. Jean Marc Etougou got the curtain raiser for Tonnerre as early as the second minute. Romuald Ebouele equalised 34 minutes later, before Joseph Bwanga transformed a penalty in injury time for the winner.
The defeat left Tonnerre 14th within the relegation zone, just like Stade Banjoun. Stade took their first win of the season beating the other crying club, Sable Batie1-0. Sable have taken over Stade’s bottom position on the table with only 4 points.
