The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will today in Lagos, Nigeria, announce winners of the various categories for the Glo-CAF Awards 2008. According to that list, Cameroon has nominees in five categories including the best national team of the year, the best club, the best revelation, best female player and the best coach of the year.
The battle for the most prestigious CAF Player of the Year in the world award will be fought among Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal and Togo), Michael Essien (Chelsea and Ghana) and Mohamed Aboutreika (Al-Ahly and Egypt). For the newly created Glo-CAF Player across Africa, the nominees are Ahmed Hassan (Al-Ahly and Egypt), Flavio Amado (Al-Ahly and Angola), Mohamed Aboutreika (Al-Ahly and Egypt), Stephen Worgu (Enyimba and Nigeria) and Tresor Mputu Mabi (T.P. Mazembe and DR Congo).
Cameroon comes in at the level of the best national team of the year with the Indomitable Lions who are vice African champion and has so far put up an impressive performance in the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations and World Cup in 2010. The other contenders in this category include the African champions, Egypt and another giant of African football, Nigeria.
Cameroon is equally present in the club category with Coton Sport, the unfortunate finalist I the last edition of the African champions league. They will be competing for this award alongside Al-Ahly (Egypt) and Club Sportif Sfaxien (Tunisia).
Cameroon’s flag bearer in the best young player category meant for footballers under the age of 23, is Stephane Mbia of Stade Rennais in France. Mbia had a difficult debut in the last African cup of Nations in Ghana but ended up as one of the heroes of the expedition scoring the goal that offered Cameroon qualification for the semi finals. He will be competing alongside the Ivorian born Chelsea midfielder, Salomon Kalou and Victor Obinna Nsofor from Nigeria who plays for Inter Milan.
Canon’s striker, Ngo Ndoubouk Marlse will be Cameroon’s ambassador in the women’s footballer of the year award to be contested with Alice Mattlou of South Africa and Genevova Anonma of Equatorial Guinea. Thanks to the exploit of qualifying Coton Sport for their first African Champions League final in history, Alain Oumbledon is short listed among nominees for the best coach award alongside the coach of the Egyptian national team, Hassan Shehata and the coach of Ah Ahly, Jose Manuel.
