PSG v Olympique Marseille: match in review
PARIS,
Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille served up a treat in defensive football as the two teams drew 0-0.
It was a game of few chances at a rain swept Parc Des Princes as both defences won out. In the first half Ronaldinho showed his skills and won plenty of free-kicks but in the second half the Brazilian faded in to the general mediocrity of the encounter. It was almost as if he had been dragged down to the game`s level. He received his fifth booking of the season for a frustrated tug on Frank Leboeuf and will therefore miss a PSG match through suspension.
You`ve got to hand it to Marseille who put in a dogged defensive display, with Abdoulaye Meite particularly impressive. Marseille seemed to be helped by the wet conditions as the PSG attackers found it hard to get the ball down and play. Striker Aloisio had a poor match and was taken off after 55 minutes. His replacement Alex did little better but did have the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for offside.
On the evidence of this performance Luis Fernandez` team will find it hard to break into the top four and challenge the likes of Lens, Lyon and Lille. The pressure is starting to mount on the PSG coach. He has spend millions and now the PSG fans and board want to see results. It is vital that they progress past Rangers into the next round of the UEFA Cup. The club desperately needs European football to fund their many expensive purchases.
The end of the game was greeted by a chorus of boos from the home fans but it was difficult to know whether that was for the team or the fact that the referee didn`t give the home side a penalty for what looked a blatant handball by Joseph Yopo. It was a couple of minutes after this incident that the referee sent Fernandez from the dugout after the PSG boss had rather too much to say. He is a colourful character at the best of times but it will be interesting to see how he copes with the pressure should his team fail to progress past Rangers.Hits: 1 | Source:Dailysoccer
