Athletics : 37 Countries Represented In Garoua
The Junior African Athletics championship enters day three today Over 300 athletes from 37 counties are taking part in this year edition.
Adepts of athletics thronged the Garoua Omnisports stadium last Wednesday to watch the offical opening ceremony of the 6th edition of the African Junior Athletics Championship. Over three hundred athletes from 37 African countries are taking part in this year’s edition. The inclusion of war torn Liberia who were not registered in the begining, brought the total number of countries to 37. The competition comes up only a few months after the election of Colonel Kalkaba Malboum at the helm of the African Athletics Confederation. This is the first time Cameroon is hosting the junior championship after the Senior championship in Yaounde in 1996. Garoua 2003, has beaten the record of participation so far. The athletes are competeting in 25 different disciplines in track and field. Present at the opening ceremony to encourage the young athletes were the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bidoung Mkpatt, His Roger Milla roving Ambassador the President of the International Athletics Federation, Lamine Diack, the President of the African Athletics Confederation, Kalkaba Malboum, the President of the African Football Confederation Issa Hayatou, the Governor of the North Province, Eyeya Zanga Louis, Government Delegate of the Garoua Urban Council, Maikano Abdoulaye, as well as traditional and religious authorities in the province. For five days, the population of the North Province will have the opportunity to detect young talents who will repesent Africa in world championships. Opening the competition, the Minister of Youth and Sports congratulated the various delgations for respecting the rendez-vous. He called on the athletes and officials to show proof of loyalty, honesty and fair play through out the competition. Five speches in all were made during the opening ceremony and all the speeches carried messages of fair play. A colourfull match past by the vaious delegations ended the opening ceremony.
