Meme referees demand pay
By Ashu Manfred in Kumba
In order to receive full pay for their job, Meme football referees have in a petition to their national FECAFOOT boss demanded that football in the South West province be played in unfenced play grounds.
This would mean they will no longer depend on imaginary gate takings, but directly get paid from Yaounde.
This was the main resolution of the Meme congress of the association of Cameroon referees (ACAF) held in Kumba recently.
The referees argued that stadium directors in the province have failed to account for gate takings. The referees are supposed to be paid from a part of the gate takings.
But stadium directors do not pay while FECAFOOT thinks that they have been paid. The referees cited the example of the Centre province where referees are regularly paid by FECAFOOT because it is established that there are no gate takings. They requested that a similar situation exist in the South West province.
Meme ACAF boss, Peter Ngando said the lack of payment was discouraging many people from becoming referees. Meantime, Ngando also criticised his colleagues for not living up to standard. In a paper presented during the congress, Ngando observed that referees were partially responsible for some of their problems with spectators, players and officials.
Ngando said some referees dressed poorly in faded uniforms. Others do not have proper working tools like a pencil, flag or shoes. He wondered how referees could exchange whistles.
Ngando also blamed the referees for throwing the reputation of the corps to the dust. They run behind club officials asking for tips to favour their clubs, Ngando observed.
