Fecafoot boss explains ramifications of recent Caf decisions
Martin Etonge
The president of the Cameroon football federation (Fecafoot), Mr. Iya Mohamed has been explaining the consequences of recent Caf decisions banning Tonnerre Yaounde from using the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium for one year and asking Fecafoot to pay a fine of $1000.
In a press briefing in Yaounde, the president who is also member of the Caf inter-club committee which sanctions Caf games, said the one year ban will be applied on Tonnerre any year they qualified for any Caf competition, not necessary in 2003.
Most fans thought since Tonnerre did not have any Caf games next year, the ban was of no consequence.
Tonnerre were punished after the second assistant referee in their Caf Cup return leg finals, Oueslati Taoufik was wounded on the head by an object thrown from the crowd.
Fecafoot were also fined $1000. But Mr. Iya Mohamed said the federation will get the money from Tonnerre. He advanced the argument that Tonnerre officials had pushed the crowd to act. In course of the violence, a glass window of Fecafoot’s bus was shattered.
For Mr. Iya Mohamed, Caf’s decision was even mild, thanks to the diplomacy of the federation. He regretted that Tonnerre officials had been noted for poor behaviour which tarnished the image of Fecafoot. The president also disclosed that some sanctions could still be on the way as the organization of that game was ‘poor’, according to reports to caf.
“Many countries complained of the poor quality of TV images supplied by CRTV. According to the sponsorship agreement signed by Caf, the national TV companies are obliged to provide the images.
“Consequently, CRTV or fecafoot could be punished. Caf is still waiting for the report of the general coordinator of that game”, Mr. Iya Mohamed said.
In his capacity as inter-club committee member, he also announced the future opponents of Cameroon clubs in Caf competitions next year. “Here also we scraped through a fine for not respecting the deadline to sent in the name of the Cup winners”.
No Cameroon team will play the preliminaries. In the 16th finals of the Champions league Canon will face El Merrikh of Sudan, in the Cup Winners’ Cup Mount Cameroon will challenge Akonanagui FC from Equitorial Guinea, while Coton Sport Garoua battle against Maranathan Fiokpo of Togo.
Mr. Iya Mohamed also talked on the reforms of African competitions. As from 2004, Caf will have only two Club competitions as the Cup Winners’Cup will be join to the Caf Cup. While qualification for the World Cup and African Nations Cup finals will have one qualifying run in years leading to the World Cup finals.
