Youth football season launched in Yaounde

Two games and two speeches from football authorities characterised the ceremony to officially launch the 2002/2003 youth football season in Cameroon.
The ceremony was held in Yaounde’s Amadou Ahidjo stadium on Sunday and the youth competitions are expected to be played at provincial and divisional level, in three categories, the under -15, under - 17 and under – 20.
On Sunday, Semenes Olympic recorded a one all draw with Sports Etudes in the under-17 category, while Espoir FC beat Ecole Brasseries 1-0 in the under-15 category.
Both games were punctuated by speeches from Fecafoot vice-president, Robert Penne and Pierre Nougui, director of general affairs in the ministry of youth and sport, representing his minister, Bidoung Mpkatt.
Penne recalled the background of the decision to re-launch youth competitions that laid soundly on Cameroon’s dismal World Cup performance.
He reminded the audience that youth football created no revenue for itself and therefore depended on the support of government, businessmen and owners of football schools.
Like Penne, Nougui dwelled on the importance of youth football to the growth of the game in Cameroon. “ That is why the government recruited a French expert, Robert Corfou, to pay particular attention to youth football”, Nougui said.
He promised the youth footballers total government support in helping them, like other youths, excel in what ever they are doing.
The season will end in May. By then it is hoped the national coaches of junior teams, together with the national technical director Robert Corfou would have had the opportunity to choice the best talents for their respective squads.
To ensure a smooth season, Fecafoot has granted subsidies and materials to each provincial league, the managers of the competitions.
