Clash of Losers In Limbe Today
Strikers from Kumbo take on Victoria United as the bell of relegation tolls .
Birds of identical plumage are known to share the same fate given that they are always seen together. Kumbo Strikers, Victoria United and Esperance may be separated by hills, valleys and the administrative divide but the current league placings give them identical colourings. After twenty four playing days in the ongoing championship, the three teams are at the nadir of the league placings. Victoria United and Kumbo Strikers particularly, are like twins in a tragic tale. The only two teams in division one from West of the Mungo, they share the same points, same number of matches won, drawn or lost. Esperance of Guider has a point higher than the duo but shares the zone of death with them. With six matches to go, the battle to evade relegation now begins in ernest. Incidentally, Kumbo Strikers takes on Victoria United today at the Centenary Stadium in Limbe. Esperance Guider welcomes Mont Cameroun while ASMY 1er travels to Garoua to confront Cotonsport.
Taking on Victoria United in its fief will be an indicator of the resolve of the Kumbo team to swim or sink with the group. After Limbe, the Strikers will take on Cintra, Stade, Union, Sable and Tonnerre before curtains drop on the championship. Three of the remaining six matches will be played in Kumbo, giving the Strikers an opportunity to pick nine points. For a team that lifted the challenge trophy, setting a record of its own, the Strikers cannot afford to drown without a fight. As host of Kumbo, Victoria United will be playing one of its remaining six hurdles today. The team has Sable and Tonnerre to host in Limbe on the 27th and 29th playing days. Other challengers include Stade, Unisport and Cintra respectively for the 26th, 28th and 30th days of play. At face value, the going does not appear to be easy given that Cintra and Sable require a few points to stay beyond the reach of unpleasant surprises. Esperance may be one point higher but the remaining matches are tough. After Mont Cameroun today, the team will travel to Yaounde and Mbouda to face the two top contenders for the title — Canon and Bamboutos.
Esperance Guider will heave a sigh of hope on the 28th and 29th playing days when it receives Racing and Fovu at home. Given that by this time Racing and Fovu will have nothing to gain, the going may be lighter depending on the fate of the other companions in the zone of relegation. With twenty seven points, ASMY 1er has every chance sailing beyond the relegation line. The Yaounde team will take on Coton today and Racing, Canon, Fovu, Union and Unisport in the remaining matches. The battle to evade relegation gets into higher gear today. Esperance, Victoria United and Kumbo Strikers have every interest to fly or sink. They also have to shed their identical feathers along their path and pick vital points that provide new companions up the league placings.
