South African club in a hurry to create history
CAPE TOWN
Rowan Hendricks from Ajax Cape Town created South African Premier Soccer League history Sunday with a 12-second goal.
Officials confirmed it was the fastest goal since the formation of the richest African football league in 1996, beating the previous record by 30 seconds.
A 40,000 crowd at Newlands Stadium and millions of viewers saw the sensational start to a South African League Cup tie in which Ajax upset Orlando Pirates 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals.
Pirates surrendered possession within seconds of kicking off and Hendricks sped down the wing, cut in, and beat inexperienced goalkeeper Thabang Radebe with a swerving lob.
Hendricks, 20, is a right-side midfielder who joined Ajax from German club Eintracht Frankfurt this year.
