Football: U-20 Lions Takes on Rwanda Today
The new draws pits the U-20 Lions in pool C along side Canada, while Burkina Faso football team was disqualified.
Cameroon’s crusade for a goal medal at the 6th Francophonie Games in Beirut begin at 6 pm today, September 28th with the nation’s Under 20 football squad confronting Rwanda. Cameroon’s first outing initially scheduled for Saturday, September 26th against Burkina Faso did not take place because the later was disqualified following their late arrival for the Games. The decisions by Mali and Egypt to withdraw from the competition at the last minute did not help matters with the organizers obliged to carry out new draws on–the-spot in Beirut. According to the draws, Cameroon will play in pool C alongside Canada and Rwanda with Cote d’Ivoire, Congo DR and Libanon in pool A, while France, Morocco and Senegal feature in pool B. The new situation emerged with new stakes and new strategies for Cameroon’s head coach as they clash against Rwanda which already secured 3-2 victory against Canada on day one action.
Come what may, serenity reigns in the U-20 Lions side. Ahead of the match, Cameroon Tribune envoys met very determined players at the Rafic Hariri University campus which harbour the Games’ village. Head coach, Etienne Sonkeng is positive even without key players at the defence and midfield. The squad arrived Beirut straight from Qatar after a 20 day training season. Absent from the squad despite being selected are central defence men and some attackers like, Owona Ndong, Nna Nguelle, Youmo Essa, Ebosse Boudjongo and Aboubakar Vincent who either abandoned the team for greener pastures in Europe or were suspended by the nation’s football association. It will also be a squad with many players at their first ever international experience in the nation’s colours. Yet, head coach, Etienne Sonkeng says Cameroon’s national anthem will inspire them to play without stress.
