Another African Champions League flop looms for Cameroon
Cameroon may rule supreme at national team level in Africa, but their clubs continue to struggle.
The central African country has not won the African Champions League since Canon Yaounde triumphed 5-2 on aggregate in 1980 against AS Bilima from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
And the likelihood of a change in fortune this year is extremely remote after Cotonsport Garoua slumped to a shock home 1-0 loss against Etoile of Congo two weeks ago.
Urbain Enzana struck just two minutes into the cup tie in rural Cameroon and the club from Brazzaville must be favoured to advance after the first round return matches this weekend.p
Etoile have a history of slaying more fancied rivals, overcoming a two-goal first-leg deficit last year to eliminate defending champions Hearts of Oak from Ghana 6-4 on aggregate.
Hearts are among four former champions facing potentially difficult matches as they seek places in the second and final qualifying round for the three million dollar group phase.
The 2000 champions were held 1-1 at home by Stade Malien, a Malian club coached by former Ghana star Abdul Razak, who received a heroes` welcome in Accra.
Raja Casablanca of Morocco, three-time winners of the premier African club competition, had to come from behind to overcome little Wallidan of Gambia 2-1 and it would be a sensation were they to go out in Banjul.
Orlando Pirates of South Africa lead Saint Louisienne of Reunion only 2-1, but French coach Jean-Yves Kerjean believes they can win handsomely on the tiny Indian Ocean island.
Holders Al-Ahly of Egypt needed a late goal from ace striker Khaled Bebo to pip Oserian Fastac of Kenya 2-1 in Cairo, but will be boosted by a 4-1 African Super Cup triumph last weekend over Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa.
