Portsmouth Boss Harry Redknapp Happy With Lauren Being Perfect Replacement
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is confident his January-signing Lauren is the perfect replacement for Glen Johnson as the England international full-back looks set to end his season-long loan stint and return to parent club Chelsea at the end of the season.
The Pompey boss said: "Glen has done a great job for us. I like him and hope he can get over his current injury before the end of the season.
"But he is Chelsea`s player, he belongs to them and I haven`t even spoken to them about his future beyond May. Who knows, he could come back (on another loan) next season. Who can tell what will happen in the summer?
"But bringing Lauren in (in January) has been a great boost to us. He can play full-back, wide right or central midfield. He`s a terrific player, a serious professional, a proper player.
"You don`t get to play for Arsenal in all those games and win all the trophies he has won without being a top-class player."
30-year-old Cameroon international Lauren joined Portsmouth on a two-year deal for a meagre £500,000 as his Gunners contract was about to end.
"We had serious competition to sign him. West Ham were texting his agent with better offers and saying whatever they (Pompey) pay you we will pay you more,” disclosed Redknapp.
"But he didn`t want to go there because he thought they might be relegated. That was the key. He didn`t want to play in the Championship."
