FANS SLEEP AT AIRPORT TO GIVE LIONS HERO`S RECEPTION
At least one thousand soccer fans on sunday slept at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport while waiting to cheer the Indomitable Lions as they returned with the glittering African nations trophy they won by beating their Senegalese opponents 3 - 2 through penalties after a virgin draw at extra time.
On hand to receive the team was also Atangana Mebara, higher education minister who represented prime minister Peter Musonge, who was still recovering from “fatigue” which knocked him down at a public ceremony in Yaounde last Thursday.
To entertain the waiting audience were the majorette dance troupe and the band of the national institute of youth and sports which were however disappointed by the “poor organisation of the reception”.
The Cameroon Airlines Big Boss jet brought in the team at 6am unknown to a majority of waiting fans, many of whom were sleeping at the reception halls and parking lots.
The players moved from the plane to the VIP waiting lounge where they rested for some two hours. They finally descended to the waiting hall by 8am only to enter into a Central Voyage bus waiting at the entrance of the hall.
By the time most fans noticed the players were in the bus, it was already moving out of the airport. The fans however cheered them. There was total commotion as fans tumbled over each other to catch a glimpse of the glorious lions whose captain Song Bahanag sat on the front seat waving the glittering trophy which Cameroon is winning for the fourth time.
The bus cruised from Nsimalen to Mvan passing through Olezoa, the Central post office to Mont Fébé Hotel. Massive crowds flooded their way waving in excitement and chanting victory songs. Cars hooted their horns and fans who wanted to have a close look at the players and the dazzling trophy followed
the reception caravan to the hotel.
At the hotel policemen battered fans who pushed and forced their way into the hotel premises to touch the Lions. Many did not succeed but nonetheless were happy that the Lions had emerged African champions at Mali 2002 and the sleepless night was worth the effort.
