Indomitable Lionesses : 90 Minutes From Nations Cup
The team is in Kenya to grab their qualification for the fifth edition of the African Cup of Nations. The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are set for next Sunday’s encounter against the Harambee Queens of Kenya. After seven days of intensive training at the Olympia Centre in Akono, the 23 players who took part in the camp and the technical staff of the team are unanimous that the squad will grab their qualification for the 2006 African Women’s Championship in football billed for October in Nigeria.
Already, Cameroon will be starting the match from a vantage position. It will be difficult for the Kenyans to make up for serious thrashing (0 - 4) inflicted on them by the Indomitable Lionesses during the first leg encounter of the qualifiers which took place on July 22nd at the Yaounde Omnisport stadium. Coach Kamdem Charles therefore has confidence in his girls.
Little wonder, he has decided to renew confidence in the squad that defended the national colours in Yaounde honourably. But for Onguene who has been replaced by Ngniopoho Pokam in the midfield, the other 17 players lined up last July 22 will travel to Kenya.
Yesterday afternoon, it was an enthusiastic team that left Yaounde for Nairobi. Anong Bernadette, captain of the Indomitable Lionesses sounded confident when she said the Lionesses will be playing with no stress. "We are going to prove that we are Cameroonians and bring home the victory," she said. She noted, with a lot of certitude, that nothing will stop them form answering present in Nigeria.
Originally scheduled to take place in September, the feminine African Cup of Nations in football will be postponed to a date yet to be announced by the Confederation of African Football, CAF. This follows a request of the local organisers in the Nigerian towns of Warri and Oghara who think the heavy downpour in September might spoil the show. The organisers are suggesting that CAF should carry forward the event to the last week of October. In effect, CAF has no other option but to comply to this wish of Nigeria which only stepped in to host the event after Gabon bagged out. This is the third time that the competition will be taking place in Nigeria since its inception in 1998. Eight countries will take part in the event this year with the finalists representing the continent at the 2007 World Cup in China.
