Race of Hope Mountaineers Rehearse Skills
Some 800 athletes from the South West Province are expected to participate in this year’s race.
In less than two months, the 11th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope will take place in Buea in the South West Province. Ahead of this great sports event, athletes in the country have started flexing their muscles while waiting for the D-Day. In Buea, groups of athletes are seen jogging along the streets daily. The joggers are dressed in white or yellow T-shirts which were used for the previous edition. However, preparations are yet to reach fever pitch in the provincial capital. According to the Assistant Secretary General of the South West Provincial League, Walter Bullivant Arreyngang, the provincial bureau is yet to select members for the local organising committee. He said that the South West bureau has already received instructions from Yaounde to start with the registration of athletes. Already, registration is going on at the sub-divisional office for Sports and Physical Education in Buea and will end on January 31. Registration requirements include: a registration fee of CFA 2000, a photocopy of birth certificate of the athlete, medical certificate of fitness issued not more than a month, and a recent licence. Race officials are expected to register with the sum of CFA 6000 while potters will register with sum of CFA 1000.
One of the major innovations this year is the introduction of a separate tournament for youths of less than 17years. According to Arreyngang Walter, the innovation is because during last year`s tournament an athlete below 17 went to the summit and came back earlier than expected. "This triggered the officials to set a prize for athletes less than 17 in this edition, but the criteria are yet to be elucidated," he said. On the allegation that the prize of the winner has been increased from CFA one million to CFA three million, Arreynang Walter enunciated that this was made public by the president of the Cameroon Athletic Federation but as at now it is yet to be confirmed. He said the South West Athletic League is expecting some 700 to 800 athletes as compared to 500 last year. He said this is because the pre-selection test which usually serves as a hindrance to most athletes will no take place this year. He said that things are going to chance for the better this year because many sponsors have been contacted. He called on the athletes to train and seek advice from the youth and sports officials on how to train rather than over work themselves and get tired before the D-day.
