Cameroon legend Roger Milla said he was sorry to see that Pierre Wome, the man who missed the penalty which would have taken the Africans to the World Cup finals, axed from the country`s African Nations Cup squad.
Wome fluffed a last minute penalty against Egypt in November which would have qualified Cameroon for the World Cup in Germany this summer in place of Cote d`Ivoire.
Five years earlier, he had scored from the spot when Cameroon beat Nigeria in a shoot-out to win the Olympic gold medal in Sydney.
"I regret he hasn`t been picked. It`s a pity," said Milla, the star of Cameroon`s run to the 1990 World Cup finals.
"Everyone can miss a penalty. When he scored the last penalty in Sydney, no-one said anything. We forgot quickly. Now we want to assassinate him.
"He is a super player who can bring a lot to the team. I hope his non-selection (for the Nations Cup which starts in Egypt on January 20) isn`t political and that it`s the choice of the coach (Artur Jorge)."
Cameroon fans, furious at their team`s failure to make the World Cup, took out their frustration on Inter Milan`s Wome by attacking his family home. —
