Preparations Gear up For National Handisport Week
Athletes from all parts of the country are expected to participate.
A national week for sports for disabled persons will take place next August 24 to 27 in Yaounde. The competition, which will be the first of its kind in Cameroon, will bring together athletes from all the ten provinces of the country. It will take place under the patronage of the Ministers of Social Affairs and Sports and Physical Education. Ahead of this great event, officials of the Cameroon Federation for Sports for the Disabled (FECASH), are living no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free competition. The second preparatory meeting took place at the Institute of Youth and Sports in Yaounde last Friday.
The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the work done so far by the various committees in charge of the organisation of the sports week. The committees put in place are the coordination committee, communication committee, lodging and feeding committee, finance committee, technical committee, animation committee, among others. The athletes will compete in athletics, goal ball and Tor ball for the blind; football and handball for the speech and hearing impaired; basketball on wheel chair, power lifting and sitting volleyball.
According to the national technical director for sports for the disabled, Jean Marie Aleokol Mabieme, the national sports week will be an occasion to know the athletes in the provinces and what they are capable of doing. He said young talents who will represent the country in international competitions, such as the upcoming Francophonie Games, will be detected.
For close to two decades, handisports in the country seems to be practiced only in Yaounde. It is the wish of the FECASH officials to bring out those hidden talents in the provinces who can be part of the national championship in future. Also, the national sports week will be an occasion for the federation to give prizes and donations to disabled athletes in order to encourage them in the practice of sports. According to FECASH officials, the national sports week will be celebrated every year.
