Hard road ahead for Cameroon clubs
By Martin Etonge in Yaounde
It is hard to imagine how Cameroon clubs will cross into the next round of continental competitions following their poor first leg 8th finals showing last week.
Since none of the clubs won any of the games, Canon Yaounde’s 0-0 draw to St. Eloi Lupopo of DR Congo in Kinshasa was considered the best score.
Canon now have the chance of making use of their massive home support to eliminate St. Eloi in Yaounde and enter the league stage of the CAF champions league. Ever since this format of the competition was introduced in 1995, Sable Batie are the only Cameroon club to have played the last eight round of the league.
Coton Sport’s defeat in South Africa to Mamelodi Sundown’s could not be considered a catastrophe because it was a narrow 1-0 score. Reports say Coton Sport played well. Sundown’s netted the winner just a minute to full time.
So if Coton Sport could maintain that steam during the return leg in Garoua, then there are hopes for qualifying for the quarter finals of the CAF Cup for them.
On the contrary it will be a Herculean task for Mount Cameroon during the return leg in Accra after they recorded a two all draw with Ashanti Kotoko in Douala.
Ashanti were two goals up before the 20th minute in Douala. Mount Cameroon ran behind the equaliser right into the last eight minutes of the game. Consequently, a qualification into the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup for Mount Cameroon appears slim.
However, like the other clubs Mount Cameroon have the chance to qualify. Nothing is lost yet.Hits: 1 | Source:The Herald
