Chiefs in charge
Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Doctor Khumalo rarely appears for Kaizer Chiefs these days but he can still provide the magic when called upon.
In Chiefs` semi-final tie against Tunisia`s Club Africain, he did just that.
Khumalo`s appearance at the start of the second half injected new resolve into a threadbare Chiefs side.
Because if injury, suspension and the fact they were unable to register their new signings in time for the latter stage of the competition, Chiefs could only muster 14 players for the game.
Hit man Mooki
Coach Mushin Ertugal shook up the side at the break and Khumalo`s passing and control of the pace of the game in the middle did the trick thereafter.
Thabo Mooki got both goals inside of five minutes soon after the restart.
The first was a header from a corner, which is surprising given the diminutive stature of Mooki who out jumped the static Tunisian defenders in the 51st minute.
Then a poor clearance from former Tunisian international Ferid Chouchane fell perfectly for Mooki, who belted a sizzling left-footer from outside the area for his second five minutes later.
Club Africain had little possession in the second half as Khumalo and cohorts controlled the ball in the middle.
To compound their problems, Club Africain defender Imed Bouhouri was sent off for a second yellow card offence, a needless tackle when there was no immediate danger to his own goal area.
Hole in the goal
Later, Nigerian import Morgan Agbadi shot into the side netting for Club Africain but the ball cut through a hole and into the back of the net.
Television replays clearly showed his shot had been wide but there were the predictable protests from the Tunisian officials, although their own players remained unconvinced.
Chiefs, who overcame Ismailia of Egypt in the quarter-finals last month, now travel to Tunis for the return leg on October 27.
Club Africain coach Rene Exbrayat said his side had been punished because of some errors but all was not lost.
"A quick goal in the return leg, and we can then make a game of it. With our supporters behind us, too, there is still much to play for," said the Frenchman afterwards.
