Arsenal go top with comfortable West Brom win
Sylvain Wiltord has continued his impressive start to the new season with two more goals as Arsenal secured a 5-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the English premier league.
Wiltord has now scored in each of Arsenal`s three matches of the new season, with the defending champions easing to the top of the league after two wins and a draw.
West Bromwich manager Gary Megson was left in no doubt the task his side face if they are to consolidate their place in the top flight this season, after slipping to their third defeat from their three opening matches.
Megson had asked his side to be resilient from the start and try to repeat the defensive performance which frustrated Manchester United at Old Trafford for long periods on the first day of the season.
But the visitors were left chasing the game from as early as the third minute, with their defence caught out of position to allow Ashley Cole to skip round the challenge of Darren Moore before shooting into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 21st minute when Nwankwo Kanu skipped past Phil Gilchrist and crossed for Cameroon defender Lauren to control before shooting high past exposed West Bromwich goalkeeper Russell Hoult.
Five minutes later last season`s double winners added a third, breaking quickly as Thierry Henry released Wiltord to draw the advancing Hoult before lifting his effort over the keeper into the unguarded net.
Arsenal eased off the pace after the break and a mistake from Cole gifted Albion a way back in to the game when his poor control allowed Scott Dobie to shoot under David Seaman with a tame effort.
Any hopes of a comeback were ended on 76 minutes, however, when Wiltord struck his second after an excellent run down the left from England defender Cole opened up Albion`s defence.
The visitors struck a surprise second four minutes from time when Jason Roberts held off the challenge of Martin Keown to shoot under Seaman.
But Arsenal hit back almost immediately as youngster Jeremie Aliadiere hit his first premier league goal for the club turning in Henry`s left-wing cross from close range.
