Okocha leads Nigeria to World Cup
LAGOS
Paris Saint Germain star midfielder Austin `Jay Jay` Okocha will captain Nigeria at the World Cup, officials said at the weekend.
"Okocha is Nigeria`s World Cup captain," secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Taiwo Ogunjobi said.
"Both the coaches and the players have embraced his leadership qualities in the recent matches we have played."
The stylish midfielder captained a new-look `Super Eagles` in pre-World Cup friendlies against Paraguay and Scotland recently.
He replaces Borussia Dortmund player Sunday Oliseh as captain. Oliseh was dropped from the team after he led a players` protest for air ticket refunds at the African Nations Cup in February.
Twenty eight-year-old Okocha was first capped by Nigeria in 1993. He featured at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.
Meanwhile, Nigeria coach Adegboye Onigbinde has said he has already picked 20 players for his final World Cup squad.
He said the three remaining spots will be filled by the time Nigeria tackle Jamaica in London on May 18.
Nigeria are drawn in Group F of the World Cup along with Argentina, England and Sweden.
They take on tournament favourites Argentina in their opening first round match on June 2.Hits: 1 | Source:Dailysoccer
