Eto`o leaves Barca with fine brace
BARCELONA, Spain -- Samuel Eto`o continued his comeback with two goals as Barcelona moved to within four points of Spanish league leaders Real Madrid with a 4-0 rout of Murcia on Saturday.
The Cameroon striker, playing his last game before heading to Ghana for the African Nations Cup, wrapped up the home side`s victory after earlier goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen and teenager Bojan Krkic.
Gudjohnsen opened the scoring in the 27th minute from just inside the penalty area following a pass from Gianluca Zambrotta before Rafael Marquez and Thierry Henry missed chances to extend second-placed Barca`s lead.
France forward Henry made amends for his miss when he set up the 17-year-old Krkic seven minutes after half-time, having burst free down the left to the by-line before delivering a perfect low cross.
Murcia goalkeeper Antonio Notario denied the hosts with several fine saves before Eto`o finally made it safe in the 77th minute with a clinical effort after another fine cross from the left by Henry.
Zambrotta then hit the post, while Eto`o -- who returned last month after four months out following knee surgery -- made it four goals in four games in the 87th minute when he stabbed in Giovanni`s cross.
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard had rested Andres Iniesta, Gabriel Milito and Eric Abidal despite being without the injured Lionel Messi, Ronaldino, Deco and Edmilson.
The result left Barcelona on 40 points, four ahead of third-placed city rivals Espanyol, while Murcia stayed ninth.
In Saturday`s late game, struggling Athletic Bilbao eased their relegation worries with a 2-0 victory at home to 10-man Sevilla.
Francisco Yeste opened the scoring after 28 minutes following a cross from the left by David Lopez.
The visitors had defender Julien Escude sent off seven minutes after half-time for elbowing Aritz Aduriz in the face as the duo jumped for the ball.
Athletic took full advantage, with Nestor Susaeta adding the second goal after 68 minutes.
Defending champions Real will bid to take their lead back to seven points at bottom club Levante in one of eight games to be played on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Iker Casillas is expected to be fit for the Madrid side despite a stomach
