Matthaus set for Rapid Vienna
HAMBURG, Germany,
Former German skipper Lothar Matthaus is set to sign a three-year contract as manager of Austrian side Rapid Vienna, the Bild newspaper reported Tuesday.
Germany`s record cap-holder with 150 selections agreed terms with club officials, but the go-ahead has yet to come from Bank Austria, Rapid`s main sponsors.
The Vienna side sacked coach Ernst Dokupil two weeks ago amid a club crisis citing unexplained "important reasons."
Matthaus has made it clear he wants to get back into football on a managerial level, but he recently turned down an offer to take over another Austrian side Graz.
The 40-year-old ended his career in November when he stopped playing for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. He last played for Germany at the Euro 2000 finals in Belgium and the Netherlands.
