Over 20 million to Boost Mt Cameroon Race
Preparations for Sunday`s race enter high gear with the disbursement of CFA 20.7 million to members of local organising committee.
To ensure a hitch-free event on Sunday`s Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, financial transparency has been the watch word from the national organising committee. In this vein, members of the national organising committee from Yaounde, led by the Secretary General in the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, Mr Ahmadou Paul, were in Buea last Tuesday not only to take stock on what has been done by the local organising committee, but to disburse some CFA 20,7 million to local sub-committees.
In a significant display of transparency, the money was disbursed openly in the South West Governor`s Office in the presence of all sub-committee members. The amount of each sub-committee was announced and signed out by the heads and provincial delegates of each of the sub-committees. "I know, by the looks on the faces of some, that not all of you are happy with this openness," Mr Ahmadou Paul said. "But l know that it is for the common good and for transparency to prevail. Last year and yesteryears, we were informed of mismanagement and this does not augur well for the future of the race."
The Secretary General called for the judicious use of the money "for the interest of the race" and strongly advised that the money, though palliative, should trickle to everybody who has something to do with the race. A rundown of the amount stands as follows: mobilisation for CPDM militants CFA One million (CFA 400,000 for the WCPDM, CFA 300,000 for the YCPDM and CFA 300,000 for the CPDM); hostesses CFA 500,000; the Provincial Delegation of Sports and Physical Education CFA 1,500,000; the South West Provincial Athletics League CFA 300,000; the South West Governor`s Protocol CFA 500,000; Porters and Traditional Ceremonies CFA 4,600,000; Delegation of Tourism CFA 800,000; Security CFA 3,500,000; Delegation of Public Health CFA 1,500,000; Animation CFA 300,000; Delegation of Culture CFA 1,500,000; Delegation of Communication CFA 1,500,000; Assistance to the Governor CFA 1,500,000; Renovation of the Molyko Grand Stand by the Buea Council CFA One million; CAMTEL CFA 500,000; SNEC CFA 100,000; and AES-SONEL CFA 100,000.
Before the money was disbursed, Mr Ahmadou Paul announced that it was exclusively from the budget of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education. Companies except SONARA, it was revealed, are yet to show any interest in sponsoring any aspect of the race. It should be recalled that some members of the local organising committee complained that the money allocated to them was small and could not satisfy their needs. The Paramount Chief of Buea, SML Endeley noted that in last year`s race, the Prime Minister disbursed CFA 90 million. He however assured the national organising committee of a hitch-free race. The Mayor of the Buea Council, Mbella Moki Charles called for meticulous organisation and for more money to be made available cognizance of the tedious task of some sub-committees.
