Cameroon cruise to quarter-finals
Cameroon dispatched Togo with an easy 3-0 win in Sikasso and advanced in the African Nations Cup.
In Sikasso, the already-qualified Cameroon started their game against Togo with three changes from the side that beat Cote `Ivoire in their last match.
The newcomers failed to impress in the first half and the Indomitable Lions looked far from the overwhelming tournament favourites that they are.
They must have received a tongue-lashing during the break though, as they did much better in the second half and took the lead seven minutes after the re-start through Lucien Mettomo, who gave Agassa Cossi no chance.
The goal broke Togo`s resistance and it was hardly surprising that Cameroon added a second in the 79th minute through Samuel Eto`o, who had unselfishly been sent through by Patrick Mboma.
Although Eto`o looked to be in an offside position, South African referee Petros Mathabela awarded the goal, which resulted in the Togolese players remonstrating with him.
Eight minutes later Eto`o turned provider when he laid the ball off to substitute Salomon Olembe, who made no mistake.
After the match there was some confusion about captain Rigobert Song, who was booked during the game. There are conflicting reports whether Song had previously been booked. If the booking in Tuesday`s game is his second, he will be suspended for the quarter-final game.
Cameroon and DR Congo join the already qualified Senegal, Nigeria and the hosts Mali in the quarter-finals. The competition ends on February 10.
