Champions League Team Of The Week (16.09.2006)

Barcelona set the pace on the first match-day of this year’s edition, with Milan, Lyon, Steaua and Valencia turning in impressive wins. Milan’s Gourcuff, Steaua’s Dica and Barca’s Eto’o take the top honours for their displays.
Goalkeeper
1. Casillas (Real Madrid): How many times? How much longer? The Spanish number one continues to perform his thankless duties for a Real Madrid side that continue to leave him exposed. Maybe he should have let Lyon pick up the 5-0 win they deserved!
Defenders
2. Sagnol (Bayern): Gave little away in defense, and kept churning in crosses for the Bayern forwards to run onto, even though they initially refused to. Textbook display at right-back.
3. Thuram (Barcelona): Like fine French wine – just seems to be getting better with age. The veteran French international played a huge role in Barcelona keeping a clean sheet while they ran riot at the other end, and got himself a standing ovation from the Camp Nou faithful for his efforts.
4. Alex (PSV): The Brazilian put in some superbly timed challenges, and displayed great positional play to ensure lacklustre Liverpool didn’t get that one opportunistic goal that they could just sit back on.
5. Fabio Aurelio (Liverpool): My surprise choice of the week! Was one of the few Liverpool players trying to show some form of imagination against PSV, and put in an impressive effort given the fact that the midfielders and forwards were simply not in the mood to cooperate.
Midfielders
6. Gourcuff (Milan): The French under-21 international showed maturity beyond his years, and yet, a freshness that can only be associated with someone so young. He may well prove to be just the breath of fresh air that could will Milan back to silverware!
7. Juninho (Lyon): Had no goals to show for his rockets, but every time the ball fell to his feet, Real Madrid were panicking, be it from 30 or 50 yards, all of which just created even more
spacefor his team-mates to run into. His passing – usually his weakness – was also impressive.
8. Dica (Steaua Bucharest): The Romanian international was the sculptor of Steaua’s superb 4-1 victory in Kiev. The number ten created one and scored two as last year’s Uefa Cup semi-finalists eventually ran riot in Ukraine.
9. Ronaldinho (Barcelona): It was always going to be a baptism by fire for Sofia, but few would have imagined such a whitewash. Ronaldinho found way too much space on the left, and absolutely murdered them, helping set up the first and the fourth, and then calmly curling one in from open play in the 93rd minute to get his share of the booty.
Forwards
10. Eto’o (Barcelona): The rain Gods thundered down on Catalunya, but it was something entirely different that thundered on poor Sofia. For the second match in four days, the Cameroon international was simply majestic. Displayed his entire gamut of skills, setting up the first two goals with exquisite touches, before producing a special - taking on three defenders and leaving them for dead before sending the ball home.
11. Fernando Morientes (Valencia): Quique Sanchez Flores seems to have leased him a new life, as the former Real Madrid, Monaco and Liverpool forward was in the right places at the right times, deciding what at one point looked like a very tricky game with his hat-trick.
Those Who Came Close
Kaka and Inzaghi were impressive for Milan,
Malouda and Govou did very well for Lyon,
Ballack`s range of passing was good despite Chelsea`s average show,
Raul Albiol put in a great display in the Valencia defense,
Rosicky and Van Persie also deserve mention for their efforts,
Saha was dynamite for United, and
Iniesta completely justified his selection ahead of Xavi.
Elsewhere, Roma and Bayern knocked in four each in the second half, to make up for a very average first half displays.
