Songo`o keeps on
Former Cameroon international goalkeeper Jacques Songo`o has become the second oldest player to feature in a Spanish first division game.
He was pressed into action for the final nine minutes of Deportivo La Coruna`s 1-0 win over Racing Santander on Sunday, 23 May.
Songo`o, now 40, was re-signed last summer as emergency cover by the club he helped to the Spanish title in 2000.
He had not played a minute in either the league or Deportivo`s run to the Champions League semi-finals this season bu the Deportivo faithful had clearly not forgotted one of their idols.
The man known to his team mates and fans as Eddie Murphy, because of his likeness to the American comedian, came on to rousing cheers from the Deportivo faithful and with his arm held aloft to acknowledge their applause.
His appearence, albeit without his trademark moustache which was shaved off recently, was also far from a brief valedictory outing.
Song`o was called upon to make two important saves, which denied Racing a point and brought back memories of his halcyon days with the Indomitable Lions.
"I don`t know if I will be registered to play next season," said Songo`o.
"That depends on Deportivo and I know they are looking at other keepers, but I would love to carry on."
Songo`o plans to stay at Deportivo as a coach, where he has been assisting the manager this season.
In addition to his 2000 league title, Songo`o was awarded the Zamora title after the 1996-97 season - a trophy that traditionally goes to the safest pair of hands in the Spanish championship.
But despite the accolades that have come his way playing for Deportivo, and his two stints at French club Metz, he still has one dream unfulfilled.
"I would love to play against my son in a professional match. He`s a promising striker."
In fact, so promising that he was part of the French team that won the European under-17 title recently.
Considering his longevity, it would be foolhardy to rule out the chance of the 40-year-old achieving this ambition.
