Two goals in two minutes from Joseph-Desire Job handed

    Middlesbrough 2-0 Norwich

Middlesbrough an easy victory over struggling Norwich City.
The Cameroon international scored his first after sliding in to poke home a Stuart Downing free-kick.

Boro defender Franck Queudrue then put through the striker, who kept his calm to place the ball through the legs of Canaries goalkeeper Robert Green.

Middlesbrough spurned several chances, with Downing impressing again after a virtuoso performance on the left.

Life in the Premiership has not been easy for Norwich this season and they came into their second fixture of the festive season with Simon Charlton, Youssef Safri and Mattias Jonson all out injured.

They were dealt a further blow early in the match when Danish international Thomas Helveg was taken off after a sickening clash of heads with team-mate Gary Doherty.

With the odds stacked against them, Norwich were forced on to the defensive as Middlesbrough created attack after attack during a one-sided first-half.

Job came in to replace the injured Mark Viduka and his partnership with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink proved to be a thorn in the Canaries` side.

Middlesbrough, however, for all their huff and puff, were unable to make the most of their possession in the opening 45.

The impressive wing-play of Downing proved to be the catalyst of many of Boro`s attacks.

He twice crossed the ball for Hasselbaink, who on both occasions failed to make the contact needed to give his side the lead.

Downing went close himself when a surging run-and-shot produced a fine save from Norwich`s Robert Green.

The Boro fans` boos at half-time were transformed into cheers soon after the interval when Job struck in two eventful minutes.

He first slid in to meet a Downing free-kick from two yards out and was then put through by Queudrue, placing his shot through Green`s legs.

The superb Downing was unlucky not to extend his side`s lead when his short-range effort was well saved by the legs of Green.

Norwich had their chances in the match with midfielder David Bentley twice going close with strikes from distance.

Boro`s Mark Schwarzer was then forced to save low from Leon McKenzie, in an otherwise quiet match for the shotstopper.

The Canaries now face a tricky New Year`s Day trip to Portsmouth, while Middlesbrough, who find themselves with a fighting chance of winning a Champions League place, are at home to Manchester United.
