Olembe in Leeds United
The French side, Olympique de Marseille, has loaned the Cameroonian midfielder to the British Premiership club, Leeds United, for one season.
Cameroonian born midfielder, Salomon Olembe has moved club. He will play with Leeds United next season. An agreement to this effect was reached last Sunday between the managers of his French Club, Olympique de Marseille, and those of the British Premiership club, Leeds United Football Club. The French side has given the player for one season, an equivalent of a year, to the British premiership club. According to Leeds Manager, Peter Reid, the move seeks to build his squad. Olembe links up with Lamine Sakho, who is also on loan from Olympique de Marseille. A statement on Marseille´s official website confirmed that Olembe has left Stade Velodrome and could make a permanent switch to Leeds if he impresses in The Premiership.
The Indomitable Lion, who played for French club, Olympique de Marseille, last season, is needed in Leeds United for his great physical and tactical qualities. In effect, Salomon Olembe is presently one of the most experienced players of the Cameroon National Team. "He´s one of those players in the middle who can joggle well with the ball. I´ve seen him once or twice and he is a really good player," Reid told the Leeds United official website. The initial agreement is that the 23-year-old Cameroon international, who signed after passing a medical test, will spend the rest of the season with the club. However, Leeds United have first option to buy the player at any time.
Apparently, Olembe will be used as a reserve. "If we get a few injuries or suspensions we´re down to the bare bones and it´s another body in there and in certain games where I want to change the formation he´s one of the players you look to in that situation", Reid said. The manager is also hoping to extend his squad further by bringing in Olembe´s French club-mate Cyril Chapuis on loan until the end of the season.
Olembe’s relocation comes virtually at the end of transfers in European Premiership clubs. It ended yesterday at 5:00pm and will re-open on January 1, 2004. in effect, transfers signed yesterday must have been initiated before midnight of Sunday. Current FIFA rules allow clubs to make transfers during two allotted periods: the summer (June, July and August) and January. The transfer deadline applies to dealings with overseas clubs because British teams, for example, are allowed to buy and loan English players throughout the season.
