Eto’o Presents Award to Barça Fans
The striker displayed his 2005 African Footballer Award to Barcelona supporters during last Saturday’s match at Camp Nou stadium.
Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o Fils last Saturday presented his third successive Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year Award to fans of his Spanish club, Barcelona. This was during the crucial Primera Liga encounter between Barcelona and Real Betis that took place before tens of thousands of Barcelona supporters at the camp Nou stadium.
Before kick off, the Cameroonian star, clad in a white T-shirt on which was boldly printed "I love Jesus", went round the pitch with the much coveted 2005 footballer of the year trophy in hand. He displayed the precious transparent glass cup, which he has dedicated to all African children, to his supporters. The spectators cheered, clapped and praised Eto’o for his exploits.
Although the newly anointed African footballer of the year did not score in the thrilling encounter that saw the Catalans bashing Real Betis, 5 — 1, the striker, who also features in the African dream team, played a leading role to end the two match losing run of his team. The performance of Frank Rijkaard`s side is a real boost ahead of Wednesday`s UEFA Champions League clash with arch rivals, Chelsea. As a player who loves scoring against his rivals, Eto’o will be out to prove his worth. For, in the ranks of Chelsea, there will be a certain Didier Drogba, who lost this year’s continental title to Eto’o by just two points.
Eto’o is already on the right track for a fourth continental trophy. The striker emerged the best scorer at the just ended African Cup of Nations with five goals to his credit. Similarly he has already scored 18 goals in the Primera Liga and three in the Champions League this season.
