Geremi could be Mags` central spark
NEWCASTLE new boy Geremi left picking his best position to Sam Allardyce after collecting a man-of-the-match award on his home debut.
The Cameroon international was deployed in central midfield in last night`s 4-1 friendly win over Celtic at St James`s Park. And with Joey Barton facing several weeks on the sidelines, Geremi – better known as a right-back or right-sided midfielder – could start the season in the centre of the park.
Geremi revealed after the game that he favours a central midfield berth, but he added all he is concerned about is playing week in, week out in a winning Newcastle side.
Asked about his man-of-the-match honour, Geremi said: "I don`t know what to say. It`s always good to have an award like that, but the most important thing was to win.
"My best position? That will be the decision of the manager. The most important thing is to be there, and to try to help the team to win.
"I`m a professional and the decision to come here was about playing and enjoying my football.
"As long as I play, I`m happy. For me, I don`t care where I play.
"But my favourite position is in midfield like I played last night, for sure.
"At the beginning the manager told me he was going to use me in midfield. I like this position and I`m ready."
Allardyce, meanwhile, was pleased with Geremi`s showing alongside Nicky Butt, though he was surprised that goalkeeper Steve Harper did not collect the man-of-the-match honour for his 10-minute stint up front.
He said: "Geremi`s an experienced player, and he and Nicky Butt showed a lot of resilience in midfield.
"There`s a lot of ability, and a lot of experience. We want to enhance that and grow from there."
