Celtic trial Cameroon defender
Cameroon international defender Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe has been handed a trial by Celtic as boss Gordon Strachan looks at ways of reinforcing his back line.
The 28-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular place for Rennes this season after missing the start of the campaign due to an injury he picked up during a pre-season friendly. The injury also scuppered his chances of joining English Premiership side Middlesbrough.
Doumbe will return to France in time for Rennes` clash with Marseille at the weekend. With Bobo Balde, Gary Caldwell and Mark Wilson all out with injuries, Strachan could be tempted to sign a defender who is not cup-tied for the upcoming Champions League games against AC Milan.
Doumbe`s agent is none other than Willie McKay who would be laughing all the way to the bank if he was given a pound for every mention he receives this month. Though he probably shouldn`t try and spend any of those pounds near Easter Road...
McKay told skysports.com: "Doumbe is over in Glasgow for a few days to train with the Celtic first-team squad. I have spoken to Rennes and they were willing to let him come over, but they want him back for the game at the weekend.
"He almost joined Middlesbrough last summer before he picked up the injury. He can play at both left-back and right-back and he is a strong, powerful defender.
"Gordon is keen to have a look at him as he is not cup-tied for the Champions League and Doumbe is excited at the prospect of joining such a big as Celtic and playing in the Champions League."
Doumbe has played in two World Cups with Cameroon and played in the 2004 Confederations Cup final.
