Renaissance and Cintra crash out of division one
Martin Etonge
Yaounde is the only city to suffer at the end of the first phase of the new shaped division one championship as two of its clubs; Renaissance Ngoumou and Cintra have been relegated to the inferior division.
According to the new format the last teams in Pools A and B must return to division two. And it all happened that Cintra finished last in Pool A with only 12 points after 18 days of play, while Renaissance had 15 points in Pool B.
Renaissance would have saved their season had they won their last game against Esperance Guider. But they lost 1-3 away to the northern side who were also threatened by relegation. Esperance needed just a draw to survive, but pressed hard for a win to finish 7th in Pool B, with 20 points, 3 above PWD Bamenda. (See table of both Pools else where)
So Renaissance reached the end of the road and have played just one and a half season in division one.
Cintra for their part have been in division one since 2000. During that period, like Renaissance, they have hardly finished the season strong. They have always battled against relegation.
Meantime, Coton Sport Garoua who topped Pool A, were the only side to finish the first round without conceding a defeat. Racing Bafoussam finished first in Pool B.
The second phase of the season will start soon with 16 clubs divided into two groups. Following the new format, the first four teams from each Pool will play in the Super League and the winners will be declared champions of the season.
The remaining four clubs from each Pool will go ahead to play the National League and will still have to fight against relegation because the last two teams will be dropped from division one.
These clubs will also not have as much subsidies from Fecafoot as those in the Super League.
Super League: Coton Sport, Sable, Fovu and Tonnerre from Pool A. Racing, Canon Bamboutos and Union Douala from Pool B;
National League: Mount Cameroon, Unisport, Kadji SA and Dang University from Pool A. Botafogo Buea, Victoria United, Esperance and PWD Bamenda from Pool B.
