Indomitable Lions get set for Confederations Cup
By Martin Etonge in Yaounde
The preparations of the Indomitable Lions for next week’s Confederations Cup in France has reached the final stage following the publication of the list of 23 players by head coach Winfried Schafer last Friday.
Remarkably absent from the list are Patrick Mboma and Wome Nlend. Ten players who participated in the 2002 World Cup have been left out, except for Lauren Etame, Raymond Kalla and Jacques Songo’o who had one way or the order resigned from the national side.
Defender Atouba Atouba is returning for an official competition after being part of the 2000 Nations Cup winning side in Nigeria. At that time he played for Union Douala.
Schafer has answered critics by including two home based players – goalkeeper Eric Kwekeu of Bamboutos Mbouda and striker Parfait Ngon A Ndjam of Canon Yaounde.
But critics still pin Scahfer down for holding on to a ‘finished’ player like Njanka Beaka and for dropping experienced goalkeeper Alioum Boukar in preference for a French fourth division goalkeeper Andre Eboue.
“It would have made more sense for us (fans) if Schafer called up another goalkeeper from a division one club in Cameroon than taking a player from the fourth division in France”, one very annoyed fan remarked.
The list of players:
