Brazil Needs Overtime To Defeat 10-man Cameroon
Sports Network) - Rafael Sobis scored 11 minutes into overtime and Brazil beat 10-man Cameroon 2-0 at Shenyang Stadium on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the men`s Olympic soccer tournament.
Brazil, which has never won an Olympic gold in soccer, couldn`t take advantage of a man advantage over the final 40 minutes of the second half but Sobis` goal helped his country take control in overtime.
Four minutes after Sobis` goal, Marcelo added Brazil`s second goal at the end of the first extra session and Cameroon had no response in the second 15-minute overtime period.
Brazil advanced to the semifinals to play either Argentina or the Netherlands on Tuesday. Cameroon was eliminated.
In Saturday`s other early game, Belgium overcame an early red card and defeated Italy 3-2 in at Workers` Stadium in Beijing. Belgium will play the Ivory Coast or Nigeria in Tuesday`s semifinals. Italy was eliminated.
Later Saturday, Argentina plays the Netherlands and Nigeria battles the Ivory Coast to determine the other semifinalists.
Brazil, which has outscored its opponents 11-0 in the tournament, struggled to solve the physical Cameroon side in regulation. Even after Cameroon`s Albert Banning was ejected in the 52nd minute for his second yellow card - there were 14 yellow cards in the match - the South American giants struggled.
Until Sobis, who scored twice in Brazil`s 3-0 win over China on Wednesday, hit the back of the net in the 101st minute.
Diego set up Sobis` goal with a long pass from the midfield circle to the top of the penalty area. With a defender on his hip and Cameroon goalkeeper Amour Tignyemb charging off his line, Sobis lofted the ball into the left corner from about 15 yards out.
Marcelo sealed the win four minutes later on a vintage Brazil play that started with two-time FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho. He sent from the right side to Thiago Neves outside the area. Neves then made a quick pass to Marcelo in the area and he flicked the ball with the side of his foot into the net.
In Beijing, Moussa Dembele scored two goals to lead Belgium over Italy, which got both of its goals from American-born Giuseppe Rossi on penalty kicks.
Belgium lost defender Thomas Vermaelen in the 18th minute to a red card - which also resulted in Rossi`s first penalty - but took the lead before halftime.
Dembele leveled the score in the 24th minute and Kevin Mirallas put Belgium in front in the 45th.
Rossi, who has four goals in the tournament, converted his second penalty kick in the 74th minute but Dembele answered again for Belgium with his second goal in the 79th.
Italy lost goalie Emiliano Viviano in the 81st minute to a red card and Belgium held on to advance.
