LONDON
Brief reports of English premier league matches played this weekend:
Played on Sunday:
LEEDS UNITED 3 BLACKBURN ROVERS 1
Leeds started superbly, with Robbie Fowler racing through to put them 1-0 up after five minutes and then converting an Alan Smith cross to make it two three minutes later.
Matt Jansen gave Blackburn hope with a well-taken goal four minutes after halftime following a mistake by defender Jonathan Woodgate. But despite pressure from the visitors, Harry Kewell made the game safe in the 71st minute with a fierce left foot drive from 20 metres.
----
ASTON VILLA 1 ARSENAL 2
Arsenal went second in the table after a delightful goal from Robert Pires. The Frenchman lobbed Peter Schmeichel on the hour to put the visitors 2-0 up.
Five minutes earlier, Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman had saved a penalty from Gareth Barry and, although Villa substitute Dion Dublin scored with a header from close range in the 69th minute, Arsenal held on.
Brazilian Edu gave the London club the lead after 15 minutes, firing home a rebound after Schmeichel had spilled a Sylvain Wiltord free-kick.

Played on Saturday:
BOLTON WANDERERS 1 DERBY COUNTY 3
In-form Malcolm Christie gave Derby the advantage after 22 minutes of this relegation six-pointer at the Reebok. Ricardo Gardner`s long-range effort levelled matters a minute into the second half but Italian Fabrizio Ravanelli restored Derby`s lead in the 53rd minute. Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was red-carded for a professional foul with three minutes left and Danny Higginbotham rapped home the penalty to secure a win that lifted John Gregory`s side to within a point of third-bottom Bolton.
----
CHELSEA 4 SUNDERLAND 0
Chelsea closed in on fourth place with their third 4-0 win in a row with ease. William Gallas poached a rare goal following a corner to give Chelsea the lead after 24 minutes. In the second-half Eidur Gudjohnsen, Mikael Forssell and Sam Dalla Bona wrapped up victory as Sunderland`s slide continued.
----
EVERTON 2 FULHAM 1
David Moyes enjoyed a dream start as Everton manager as David Unsworth put them his side in front after only 32 seconds. Things got better when Duncan Ferguson, recalled and named captain by Moyes, made it 2-0 after 13 minutes with Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar at fault. Fifteen minutes later Everton midfielder Thomas Gravesen was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Fulham poured forward and pulled one back through Frenchman Steed Malbranque seven minutes into the second period. But Moyes`s side hung on after that for a morale-boosting win.
----
MIDDLESBROUGH 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Middlesbrough created most of the chances but were undone by two opportunist finishes. Emile Heskey opened the scoring after 33 minutes from close-in after superb work by Nicolas Anelka. Norwegian John Arne Riise drilled in Liverpool`s second six minutes from time before Gareth Southgate headed his first goal for Middlesbrough with a minute left.
----
NEWCASTLE UNITED 2 IPSWICH TOWN 2
A day to forget for Alan Shearer. The former England striker had a first-half effort disallowed and Ipswich took a shock lead through Marcus Bent five minutes into the second half. Frenchman Laurent Robert levelled with a beautiful free kick on the hour mark, but poor defending by Newcastle allowed Bent to restore Ipswich`s lead three minutes later, his ninth goal of the season. Shearer had another effort ruled out for offside, headed an equaliser after 88 minutes but then missed the chance to win it when he sliced his penalty wide in stoppage time after Clarence Acuna was felled.
----
SOUTHAMPTON 2 LEICESTER CITY 2
Two Brian Deane goals in the space of three minutes -- the first a header, the second a tap in after Muzzy Izzet`s effort had hit both bar and post -- put Leicester into a shock lead at St Mary`s. Latvian Marian Pahars headed the home side back into contention before the interval and he denied Leicester victory at the death from the penalty spot.
----
WEST HAM UNITED 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 5
In a frantic start Steve Lomas headed West Ham in front but David Beckham floated a wonderful shot over David James from a Paul Scholes pass to make it 1-1.
Frederic Kanoute`s fine finish restored West Ham`s advantage but almost instantly Nicky Butt acrobatically converted Beckham`s free kick to make it 2-2 after 22 breathless minutes. The champions took over after the break and Scholes put United in front for the first time after good work by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 55th minute.
The Norwegian made it 4-2 nine minutes later, Jermain Defoe scored West Ham`s third but Beckham finally killed them off a minute from time with a penalty after Scholes was tripped.
