Prince Nawaf Bin-Faysal Bin-Abdulaziz attended the training session of the Saudi Arabian national team on Sunday, in a very rare gesture bidding to boost the squad’s morale ahead of their group E opening match against Germany on Friday.
Prince Nawaf, the Secretary General of the Youth and Welfare Association, the main body governing all sporting activities in the kingdom, revealed in an interview with the London-based Saudi daily Al-Riyadh on Monday: “We have to play the game according to our own resources and capabilities, always sticking to logic in sports, still I have to say our aspirations in the World Cup have no limits.
“We have been gearing up our efforts throughout the qualifiers and the friendly matches against other national teams that enabled us to represent better the game in our country as well as in Asia,” Prince Nawaf added.
“Everything will depend on the overall rounding of the technical staff and squad on the ground, who were given every possibility that are at our disposal to express their abilities and resources."
The national team skipper Sami Al-Jaber also revealed in an interview: “Our preparations for the World Cup are up to the challenges we are expecting. All the players are highly motivated, incentive is here to bolster our chances in the competition.”
Sources close to the technical staff hinted that manager Nasser Al-Johar will line only one striker Hassan Al-Yami up-front, both Sami Al-Jaber and Nawaf Al-Temyat shouldering him when needed from midfield.
Al-Johar will be expectedly opting for a cautious defensive scheme of play in his opening clash against the German national team, the daily revealed: “Midfield will be filled by numbers in order to provide better support to the defensive line.”
