Fred VUBEM
The Samba Boys obtained a crucial draw one-all against Ngaoundere University to secure the championship title on the 25th day of play last Saturday.
After an unsuccessful bid last football season, Tiko United metamorphosed to garb the championship title this year. Though some people had already declared the Samba Boys victors at the end of the 24th day of play on the basis of particular goal advantage in case of parity between Tiko United and Coton Sport, the Club from the South West region last Saturday obtained clinched the crucial point that give them a clean lead at the helm of the championship. The Boys of Charles Dikongue Eteki, played a one–all draw against relegation bound Ngoaundere University on the 25th day of play last Saturday May 23. Tiko United therefore has a total of 49 points in 25 matches, 4 points ahead of their immediate followers, Coton Sport with 45 points who can no longer catch up with the Samba even in case of victory for the cotton weavers and defeat for the Samba Boys on the 26th and last day of play. Reason why football book makers have qualified the between Tiko united and Sable Batie on the last day of play as a mere gala match. Tiko United recorded 13 victories, 10 draws and only 2 defeats, scoring a total of 29 goals and conceding 14.
Tiko United is the first club west of the Mongo to have won the championship title since its inception some 50 years ago and puts an end to Coton Sport’s domination who have won the elite championship for six consecutive years. The club has had a solid popular base ever since they mounted to the first division in 2007 during the last edition of the interpool competition as testified in the words of the club president, Charles Dikongue Eteki who during the congress of the club in March said, “We appreciate the support that the team has received up to now. We wouldn’t have been here today if we didn’t work as one man”.
Though Tiko United hit the headlines when they recruited former Indomitable Lions, Jean Claude Pagal who took part in the Italia ’90 expedition, their rise to the firmament of football in the country is thanks to the efforts of players like team captain Louis Zome, Ake Ambenou, Ngwa Baldwin, Enow Tabot, Louis Ategha Foy and Robert Omega.
Tiko United was created as far back as the early 1960s under the name, C.D.C Tiko but during the late 70s and early 80s, the Cameroon Development Corporation could no manage the club and the indigenes took ownership of the club and renamed it, Tiko United. Two years after their maiden entry in the elite championship, Tiko United has erected itself as one of the country’s best football clubs and will be one of Cameroon’s ambassadors in the prestigious African Champions league next year.
