Volleyball: Lionesses in Kenya for African Championship
The tournament which serves as qualification for the world championship will end on September 12.
Hardly have they had time to savour their silver medal in the just-ended All African Games in Algeria, the women’s national volleyball team is again involved in another international championship. Despite initial financial difficulties, the volleyball Lionesses left the country last Sunday for Kenya to take part in the 16th women African Nations’ championship. The tournament which began yesterday will end on September 12.
The last All Africa Games Gold medallists, Algeria, will be great favourites for the title, together with the defending champions, Kenya, as well as the usual competitors Egypt and Nigeria. However, Cameroon will be aiming to mount the highest rostrum in volleyball on the continent given that the winner qualifies for the world championship to take place in Japan. Cameroon had beaten some of Africa’s great names in volleyball like Algeria and Kenya during the last All African Games. Other countries expected at the event are Tunisia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Seychelles and Mauritius.
The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Uganda but was moved to Kenya due to the fact that Ugandan Volleyball Federation couldn’t finish the requested renovation on its in-door hall. The African Volleyball Confederation, CAVB, therefore decided to change the venue to the substitute country, Kenya. The winner of the tournament qualifies for the world championship to take place in Japan in November.
