Cameroon/Japan : Accord to Renovate Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium
The accord was signed last Friday at the end of a working visit by a delegation from Japan to finalise modalities for the project.
The government of Cameroon on Friday October 13, signed an accord with the Japanese government to rehabilitate the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde to be funded by the Japanese cooperation fund. The signing was done for Cameroon by the Minister of Sport and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa, while Yukio Honda, the head of the three-man Japanese delegation to Cameroon, signed for his country.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Minister of Sport and Physical Education hailed Japan for their assistance to Cameroon. An assistance that began with the construction of some primary schools in Cameroon by the Japanese government and now the renovation of the most prestigious football temple in the country, the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. He expressed the readiness of Cameroon to enable the company that will be selected to carry out the project and do its job well. Augustin Edjoa expressed the wish that the renovated Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium be inaugurated by a match between the indomitable Lions and the Japanese national football team.
A wish that was shared by the head of mission, Yukio Honda who said his country’s romance with Cameroon in the sport domain began with the participation of the Indomitable Lions in the World Cup in Japan. Work on the project started since October last year with preliminary studies which lasted six months. The results of this study was forwarded to the Japanese foreign ministry for approval. He said the selection of the company to carry out the project will be done in Japan in December in the presence of a delegation from Cameroon. Work on the project, which according to the accord has to be carried out only by a Japanese company, will start in January 2007 and end by October the same year.
The Japanese delegation arrived in the country on October 7 and had a working session with the Steering Committee to supervise the renovation of the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. They were received on October 10 by the Minister of Sport and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa.
